Newburyport Wins

It was Music Festival at Spencer Peirce Little Farm and the crowd poured in to catch the Essex Base Ball League’s playoff action.
Game 1 was an 8-7 victory for Newburyport over Lowell. It was a back and forth battle paced by defense and pitching. Newburyport’s Mike “Ace” Kent got the win on the hill, Bob “the Better” West threw out a runner stealing second late in the game, 3rd base was finely fielded by Paul “the New Guy” Chiozzi and Charlie “the new Dad” Ticotsky, leadoff hitter Ryan “Wild Wild” West was on base and stealing second all day, and Jon “Specs” Curley executed a delayed steal of third base that surprised even his own team. The game was closed out with a towering foul ball in left that was well field by the sure handed Patty “Boom Boom” Wadland with a runner on second.
The championship game was a 16-6 victory for Newburyport over Lynn.  Newburyport’s Matt “Queen of Diamonds” Larrabee broke out of what seemed a month long hitting slump hitting daisy cutter after daisy cutter. Jon “the Professor” Streff and Dan “Minuteman” Kent also paced the offense.
A big thank you from the EBBL to all of our family, friends, and fans for attending. And special thanks to Spencer Peirce Little Farm for hosting.
Our final event of the year is Jan’s Pitch on October 1st, we hope to see you there!

Everyone Wins….

On a beautiful fall day this past Saturday members of the Essex Base Ball Organization laced up their cleats for an action packed day of baseball, entertainment, and fine Ipswich Ale. Four close and exciting games took place during the Ipswich Ale Harvestfest.

Game 1.

In a game where Lowell had several new recruits and a few fill in the Lowell bats came to life scoring 15 runs to charge ahead but throughout the game Lynn chipped away and made a game of it but in the end Lowell was able to hang on for a 15-11 victory.

Game 2

The Lowell bats fell asleep and the Live Oaks answered the call winning 6-2.

Game 3

The Clamdiggers defeated Portsmouth 11-9 in the first of two games with
clutch hitting and flashy defense. Right fielder Drew “Captain Clam” Murphy
threw out a runner trying to score from second and catcher John “Specs”
Curley tossed out a runner trying to steal second. On offense Dan
“Minuteman” Kent shined while his newborn daughter Madison looked on and
cheered/cried with excitement.

Game 4
The final game of day was the second game of the Portsmouth & Newburyport
doubleheader and it didn’t disappoint the large group of spectators in
attendance.  Superior defense and strong pitching on both sides proved to be
the theme as the two Port cities dueled back and forth while keeping the
cranks on the edge of their seats. Newburyport took a 5-3 lead into the
bottom of the 9th when the Portsmouth bats came alive just in time to tie
the game on a clutch two out single by Cam “Shaggy” Champey after a long
hard fought at bat. The game continued scoreless into the bottom of the 11th
when Jon “Wheels” Allen led off with a hard hit single. After Allen’s timely
steal of 2B, Jim “Champ” Champey smashed a single into LF bringing Allen
into 3B to set up the potential game winning run with no outs recorded. The
Clamdigger’s made their first out of the inning on a great catch and throw
from CF which held Allen at 3B, however the Rockingham’s rookie outfielder
Tyler “Walk-Off” Nauffts stepped up and confidently drove in the game
winning run with a hard single up the middle thus ending the Essex Base Ball
Association’s regular season the same way it began with each team in the
league getting a victory on the day.

Members of the EBBO will form a Mixed Nine squad Sunday September 18th to play the Boston Beaneaters on Boston Common.
