The Essex Base Ball Club kicked off its 2007 season with two impressive wins at Monkeyfest this past weekend. In the first game Essex took a commanding lead against their long time rivals the Melrose Pondfielders and never looked back winning 15-5. The team was lead by the strong pitching of Bill “The Undertaker” Gendall and Brian “The Wizard” Besse. In the field there were several nice plays by the third baseman Pat Cook. The offense was strong all around.
In the second game of the day for Essex they took on the always-powerful Cornish Game Hens of Providence. The game was a back and forth slugfest but thanks to a comeback in the bottom of the 8th Essex was able to hold off the power hitting of the Game Hens and win 18-16. The offense was led by Captain Brian “Cappy” Sheehy, Pat Cook, Lee Smith, Mark Scapicchio, and Bill “The Undertaker” Gendall. Essex was also aided in the day by the resurfacing of Matt “Q” Quinlan.
Monkeyfest was to also celebrate star shortstop Chris “The Monkey” Sheehy’s 21st birthday, so a happy birthday to him and HUZZAH for the Melrose Pondfielders and the Cornish Game Hens for making it a great day.
Essex/ Lynn’s next practice will be Sunday April 29th at 12pm @ Endicott Park in Danvers. The next game will be a round robin Sunday May 6th @ Endicott Park in Danvers, games are 11am, 1pm, 3pm.
