Baseball in the Classroom Flier

Baseball in the Classroom: How to make baseball themes and topics relevant in your social studies classroom

When: April 21st 1pm

Where: Concord Museum, Concord MA

Description

Join educators Brian Sheehy and David Alexander as they provide unique, innovative, and creative new ways of engaging social studies students through our national game of baseball.  Both Brian and David have developed concepts, lessons, and discussion topics that educators can use in their traditional classrooms to provide their students with a fun and “different” way of looking at history.  Our goal is to make these materials more accessible to educators so that a new generation can understand and enjoy the rich history of baseball and the key part the game plays in our national identity.

Brian Sheehy is a history and wellness teacher at North Andover High where while teaching traditional history classes he has also created and developed several sports related electives, including Sports in American Culture and Sports of the Past.  Sports of the Past is a unique cross discipline class in which students learn about the history of a variety of sports and then play and earlier form of the sport.  Brian has also been involved with vintage baseball for 14 years and has given lectures and demonstrations on 19th century baseball all over the country and even in Ireland.  His 19th century base ball exhibit has been on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Fenway Park, libraries, museums, and other minor league ball parks.

David Alexander has been teaching in Massachusetts public schools since 1994.  In 2014 he was given the opportunity to develop a new elective course at Monomoy High school entitled Baseball & Society.  Creating this course from “scratch” has been both a challenging and rewarding experience.  Seeing first hand how using baseball can lead to profound moments in the classroom has motivated him to share his experiences with others.
