It was a busy weekend with all four of the Essex Base Ball Association clubs playing this past weekend. On Saturday the Portsmouth Rockinghams and Lowell Base Ball Club (Playing as the Whipple BBC of Kittery Maine) traveled to Leary Field to participate in the annual game sponsored by the Portsmouth Athenaeum. The day was filled with activity with the 12th NH Regiment Band and the Kearsarge Antique Steam Fire Engine.
Both games of the double header were close with teams exchanging leads back and forth. In game one the Rockinghams were able to secure the lead in the top of the 9th and hold on to victory 14-13.
In game two the Whipple’s aka Lowell was able to secure the victory 10-9 in another back and forth contest.
On Sunday on Georges Island “Newburyport takes Two from Lynn on George’s Island”
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon on George’s Island. There was also a special celebration marking the 300th anniversary of Boston Light, the nation’s first and oldest lighthouse. A special cake was made for the event.
Game 1 was all about the offense with Newburyport coming out on top 15-10. The ground was dry and deep line drives in the gap were finding their way to the left field concrete wall and center field tree. Lynn held the lead early but late game home runs by Dan “Minuteman” Kent, Bryan “The Rookie” Daly, and Matt “Queen of Diamonds” Larrabee paced the offense to the victory.
Game 2 was all about pitching with Newburyport winning 15-3. Kevin Byrne took the hill with dozens of family members looking on and silenced the previously loud Lynn bats. Patty “Boom “Boom” Wadland and Bob “How are ya” West drove in the majority of the runs.
Thanks to the Boston Harbor Island Alliance and George’s Island for hosting, it’s a special place to play and we look playing next summer
