Sandwiched between two scorching hot days the Essex Base Ball Organization was lucky Saturday when the weather broke to a comfortable 80 degrees. Three games were played on the day.
Game 1: Newburyport 7, Lowell 6
The Clamdiggers edged the Lowell 9 on Saturday at the farm. The Clamdiggers led the entire game and withstood a Lowell comeback in the later innings. Mike Kent continued his pitching dominance with John Streff leading the offense, getting on base every at bat. Pat Wadland also hit a cornfield homerun.
Game 2: Newburyport 10, Boston 3
The Clamdiggers swept the day, beating the visiting Beaneaters. Kevin Byrne made his pitching debut and silenced the big Boston Beaneater lefties. John Curley played outstanding defense as catcher, making many put outs on foul tips.
In Game three the Beaneaters defeated the Lowell Nine
