This past weekend the Essex Base Ball Club and Mechanics of North Andover traveled to Cornish Maine to participate in the inaugural New England Vintage Base Ball Tournament. Both squads joined with the Bristol Blues, Mudville Base Ball Club, Dirigo BBC, and Flemington Neshanocks to round out the competition.
The first game of the tournament featured the Mechanics making their team debut against the seasoned Neshanock Club of Flemington NJ. The boys from NJ easily defeated our boys 20-6. In the second game the Mechanics didnt fair much better against the Bristol Blues falling 20-5.
On Saturday the Essex Nine came out firing winning the first game against the Mudville BBC 16-2 and then in their second game they defeated Dirigo 15-2. The Essex boys had solid defense and their bats were checked in.
On Sunday the first game for Essex saw them matched up against Flemington and despite a very close back and forth game the Essex boys fell short 8-5. Essex was not discouraged and finished out the tournament beating the Bristol Blues 16-3.
On Sunday the Mechanics matched up against Mudville and fell 6-4 but then defeated Dirigo 11-9 to finish out the tournament.
We would like to thank the Cornish Historical Society, the Dirigo BBC, Marjorie Adams for educating us on Doc Adams, and all of those who made the tournament such an enjoyable experience for all members of the EBBO. We look forward to next year.
