Capping off an undefeated season, The Newburyport Clamdiggers won their second championship in three years.
Game one of playoff Sunday saw Newburyport victorious over Lowell, 7-1. Newburyport pitcher Pat “Shortorder” Cook pitched a heck of a gem, keeping Lowell’s offense in check all game. Cook was helped by key defensive plays; with dives from Matt “Lanky Arms” Larrabee who is not afraid of doing his laundry, a running catch in right field by Ryan “Planter’s Punch” West, and flashy plays by shortstop Dan “Minuteman” Kent. The offense was paced with timely hitting by Adam “Abacus” Gilbert and John “The Professor” Streff.
Game two saw Portsmouth beat Lynn,10-9. Down by 5 in the bottom of the 9th, Lynn almost staged a monumental come back. The balls looked like watermelons coming in as they scored four runs and left a man on second to end the game.
In the championship game Newburyport beat Portsmouth, 14-5. Newburyport hit the ball consistently the entire game. The defense was paced by Patty “Boom Boom” Wadland, who was no muffin in left field catching everything on the fly and recording all three outs in the 8th.
