Opening day was a great success. Unlike the original opening day the weather could not have been nicer as the sun was shining, the cranks we happy, and the ballists were excited to finally kick off our league schedule. The first game of the day did no disappoint as the Lowell Nine and Portsmouth Rockinghams battled back and forth all day long. In the 8th the Lowell Nine secured a 3 run lead but that lead was erased in the top of the 9th. Jim “Prince” Bodwell who is moving to Florida in a few weeks stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 9th and hit a long triple with no out. He was able to score on the next batters ground ball to the right side. The two teams were very evenly matched and Portsmouth has added several fine new ballists.
Game two was never close as the Lowell Nine continued their 9th inning heroics and scored 11 runs in the first inning never looking back from a 26-10 victory.
Game 3 was an offensive showdown with Newburyport Clamdiggers ending up on top 18-8. The Lynn Live Oaks flashed the bare hands early throwing Newburyport’s speedy leadoff hitter out on an attempted steal of 3rd. Later in the game they also tracked him down in a pickle between 3rd and home plate that seemed to last forever. Dan “Minute Man” Kent and “What About” Bob West paced the offense with multiple daisy cutters each.

Game 4 was all about defense. Lynn threatened to have a big second inning with 2 runners on base and no outs, but Newburyport turned a key double play thanks to first baseman Matt “Long Arms” Larrabee and Jon “Silky Smooth” Streff. Newburyport was able to hold on for the victory over Lynn.
Along with the games catcher for the Lowell Nine John “Face Plant” Lynch shaved his head after the games to raise money for childhood cancer. The Essex Base Ball Organization use some of the funds from the Jan’s Pitch Game to make a donation to this great cause. Pictures of Face Plant to come….
A big thanks to all the fans for attending! Dont forget about our Father’s Day festivities on the 21st.
