On Saturday the Essex Base Ball Club traveled to South Portland Maine to play against the Dirigo Base Ball Club and Presumpscot Nine both of Maine. The day was sponsored by the Maine Historical Society and was played at beautiful Southern Maine Community College. In the first match against Dirigo the Essex Nine marched off to a commanding lead but due to a series of errors and poor play the Dirigo batters were able to cut the lead but the experienced Essex boys dug in and eventually defeated Dirigo 14-7. The second game was against the newly formed Presumpscot Base Ball Club and despite their inexperience they played flawless defense limiting the Essex strikers to just four runs on the day. Despite the low offensive turnout for the Essex boys their defense was impeccable and the pitching of Pat “Short Order” Cook kept the strong Presumpcot batters off the bases. The final score was 4-0 in favor of Essex. The Essex Nine is excited to see such a competitive team and look forward to seeing them on the field again soon.
On Sunday back at the farm the Newburyport Clamdiggers took on the Portsmouth Rockinghams. In a back and forth game the Clamdiggers were able to rally from behind to capture a 11-10 victory. The second game was also won by the Clamdiggers 10-6. Despite the losses the up and coming young Rockinghams showed their ginger and look to continue to improve.
