July 2nd the Essex Nine traveled to Smolak Farms in North Andover to participate in a charity game against the North Andover High Varsity Baseball team. Both Cappy and Monkey coach at North Andover High so they wanted to show their former players how “19th century” baseball was played. Both games were defensive stalemates with the NA Varsity taking the first game 2-1 but Essex taking the second game 3-2. The Essex Nine was impressed by how quickly the modern players picked up the vintage game and hope that some of them consider trying their hand at playing 19th century base ball in the future.
On July 10th the Essex Nine participated in the 6th annual Civil War Base Ball Game in Waltham. The games were against the Melrose Pondfielders and saw the Essex Nine win both matches by the scores of 8-1 and 13-3. The games highlights were Swifty hitting two homeruns.
